Mom and I had to go to the VA for an appointment. Antonio, our Uber driver, 32 yr. old, recently came from Cuba. He is an IT guy who came to America to make a life for his daughter who is six. His wife, his daughter and his whole family are in Cuba. He came through legally and he is waiting for his green card to secure an IT job that he was offered. He bought a new red Toyota Corolla to drive for Uber while he waits. Antonio doesn't like driving. For three years he hasn't seen his wife or daughter. He has patience. He says it will take a year or two more. He does manage to get a face time call to his daughter and wife but very few times.
He told me about Cuba.
Cuba has no internet. It has no new cars. His mother just sold her 1954 Ford and bought a new 1985 car which they call new. His mother cries every time he calls her she has to travel to a place to receive his call.
His wife is a psychologist and she is good. She works for free and people give her money on the side. She was watched by the government. They closed her business. They knew she took money. She made too much money.
So then she went to Cosmetology school. She opened a beauty shop and became well known as a top hair stylist. The government came to her door again and they made her close her shop. This is normal for them.
He said that his generation after receiving their education try to leave either legally or illegally. . Antonio's friends think he is a millionaire because of his car. He told me in Cuba the rich rent a nice car in front of expensive hotels by the hour for huge amounts of money. I told him I heard that the doctors in Cuba are good. He said the doctors are very well trained but they haven't any equipment .
I asked him what does he like about the U.S.A. He said freedom. He loves to eat when he wants. In Cuba you may have money for food but the shelves at their grocery stores are empty.
Antonio is happy, joyful and focused and so knowledgeable. It was our pleasure to meet such a young man.
Mom and I prayed for him and mom told him a beautiful story about Jesus and that He has a plan for his life and how he will succeed beyond his wildest dreams.1st Corinthians 2:9 Then mom left her purse in the car and he had to come back an hour later and return it.
Just think of all we have. I have special friends who came here from Cuba, that is why I was anxious to hear. They have told me they do not want what happened to them happen here. Antonio was grateful for the smallest things. Thank you for reading this.
